Best Service, Best Value is R.P. Lumber's Commitment

Forty years ago, Robert L. Plummer and his wife Donna were high school teachers in St. Louis, Mo. Always the entrepreneurial type, when Robert decided to leave teaching and open his own lumberyard, he did so from scratch. He borrowed $5,000, and during a bitterly cold January he set up shop in a site that had been abandoned for over a decade. When he first hung out his shingle, Plummer didn't have a customer for the first three days. And for the first three years, the building was heated by a potbelly stove in the middle of the store. He didn't have forklifts, so he unloaded product by hand. To use the restroom, employees had to walk six blocks to the nearest gas station.

Construction Boom Exposes Labor Shortage Threatening Homebuilding

If you want a view from the front lines of the residential construction industry, talk to Randy Strauss. Seated in the front of his pickup truck and mobile office, with blueprints and files strewn about the passenger seat, Strauss calls me from a job site near Amherst, Ohio, roughly 40 miles east of Cleveland, where his firm, Strauss Construction, is based. He's been part of the industry since he was a kid. His grandfather was a cabinet maker, and his father was a homebuilder who worked alongside his son from the year they started the company in 1979 to a month before he passed away at age 83.

Roseburg DuraTemp® Real Wood Siding

Roseburg Roseburg DuraTemp® siding has a natural textured appearance with a surface that is 100% clear and free of patches and repairs. It’s easy to paint and can withstand exposure to the elements. DuraTemp is manufactured with a strong plywood veneer inner core made of western softwood veneer and a fully water resistant (NAUF) phenolic resin. The surface is a tough hardboard face that won’t split, crack or check -- even with rough treatment. The plywood core is easy to handle and install yet stronger than most other siding products. Unlike vinyl and cement siding, DuraTemp siding is made from real wood, an environmentally friendly renewable resource.

Mortgage Rates Could Top 6 Percent by 2020

Almost a decade after it all began, the Federal Reserve is finally talking about unwinding its grand experiment in monetary policy. And when it happens, the knock-on effects in the bond market could pose a threat to the U.S. housing recovery.

Just how big is hard to quantify. But over the past month, a number of Fed officials have openly discussed the need for the central bank to reduce its bond holdings, which it amassed as part of its unprecedented quantitative easing during and after the financial crisis. The talk has prompted some on Wall Street to suggest the Fed will start its drawdown as soon as this year, which has refocused attention on its $1.75 trillion stash of mortgage-backed securities.

Kleer PVC Trimboards Kleer trimboards with TruEDGE® are engineered to resist dirt and easily wipe clean, but the path from the manufacturing plant to installation can be hard on building materials. With KleerPak, Kleer trimboards are wrapped in small quantities to help prevent dirt and wear along the way. So, dealers can sell smaller quantities without leaving the remaining stock exposed in the lumberyard or warehouse and builders can use the boards they need on a job. After all, of the home finishes a customer can choose, dirty is never one of them.

In Depth: Mouding & Trimboards

If you're a pro dealer offering trim and moulding products to builders and remodelers, there's no doubt that wood has been good. Widespread availability of pine board in the east and Canadian spruce and western red cedar in the west, along with well-established supply chains help keep costs consistently low, while contractors love wood's workability and homeowners continue to embrace its warmth and visual aesthetics.

At least for the next four years, demand for wood moulding and trim will continue to grow, increasing 5.7% annually to fuel $5.8 billion in category sales by 2020, according to a study from The Freedonia Group, an industry research firm. In addition to new home building, growth in the office and commercial sectors will boost demand as wood remains a top option to finish and frame both exterior and interior rough construction.
