The LBM industry at large is wrestling with a shortage of qualified help. With business up at least modestly in many markets, this problem gets amplified. Though there is no sure-fire way for dealers to retain their top people, one option is to require employees to sign non-compete agreements. Readers are sharply divided on the use of non-competes. In fact, fewer than 20% of respondents to our survey use them. Still, arguments can be made both in favor and against, so this month’s survey asks, “To Non-Compete Or Not?”

Dricon Fire retardant treated woodDricon® Fire retardant treated wood has been repeatedly called “over-engineered” since its launch in 1981, but after 35 years of performance excellence, we’re ok with that.

Whether you’re using plywood or lumber, Dricon® has an unmatched record of protection against flame spread, smoke development, rot and decay. We back that up with a 40 year roof-system warranty against heat degradation, and the industry’s only preservative warranty on fire retardant wood.

Let's Make Regulations Reasonable Again

As President Donald Trump settles into the White House, many financial industry executives are looking forward to celebrating what one has termed "the bonfire of the rule books," anticipating candidate Trump's promise to eliminate two existing regulations for every new one that is created. While this "ding-dong-the-witch-is-dead" reaction to the current regulatory environment is understandable, it should be tempered by our memory of the problems excessive deregulation has caused in the past.

Experts: Rising Mortgage Rates Will Significantly Impact 2017 Housing Market

Increasing mortgage rates and their impact on affordability will be the most significant force driving the 2017 housing market, according to the latest Zillow Home Price Expectations Survey.

Just how big is hard to quantify. But over the past month, a number of Fed officials have openly discussed the need for the central bank to reduce its bond holdings, which it amassed as part of its unprecedented quantitative easing during and after the financial crisis. The talk has prompted some on Wall Street to suggest the Fed will start its drawdown as soon as this year, which has refocused attention on its $1.75 trillion stash of mortgage-backed securities.

The quarterly survey, sponsored by Zillow and conducted by Pulsenomics LLC, asked more than 100 housing experts and economists what factors would have the greatest impact on U.S. housing this year. The most frequent answer was rising mortgage rates and their impact on mortgage affordability, with more than half of panelists selecting it.

ThermalBuck™ Simplifies Window Installation, Saves Time & Money

BRINC Energy-efficient builders have struggled for years to solve multiple problems when installing windows with exterior insulation. With 2012 & 2015 Energy Codes requiring continuous insulation, more builders than ever are looking for better solutions.

ThermalBuck™ solves the challenges presented by “outsulation” by extending the mounting point for windows & doors to create a flush plane for cladding. Dimensionally stable and strong, ThermalBuck™ prevents compression of rigid insulation, helping to maintain the integrity of the window installation.

Simple to install and easier to flash than a wood window buck, ThermalBuck™ saves both time and money. With an R-value range of 4.4 to 11, it insulates the mounting points of windows & doors, limiting thermal bridging.  ThermalBuck™ is a true continuous insulation
solution for the building envelope.

President Donald Trump will meet for the first time Monday with Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. But the U.S.-Canada trade relationship over the years has not been as smooth as you might think. There have been trade wars, acts of retaliation, allegations of dumping and jobs lost.
