Will Tax Reform Hurt Housing Market?

A proposal coming out of the White House to raise the standard tax deduction would be welcome news for most taxpayers, but some in the housing industry fear it could discourage new homeowners.

Among the changes being proposed is an almost-doubling of the standard deduction -- from $12,600 to $24,000 for a married couple filing jointly.

Opinion: The Construction Industry has a Productivity Problem—Here’s How to Solve it

The global construction industry has a chronic productivity problem. Over the past 20 years, productivity has grown at only 1% annually, only around one-third the rate of the world economy and only around one-quarter of the rate in manufacturing.

While construction has appeared stuck in a time warp, other sectors have transformed themselves. Consider that in the United States between 1947 and 2010, agriculture achieved cumulative real growth in its productivity of 1,510% and manufacturing 760%. Construction managed only 6%. U.S. construction-sector productivity is lower today than it was in 1968, and investment has fallen over the past decade.

Lumber History Repeats Itself, and It’s Gotten Ugly

History, it seems, is simply repeating itself. Random Lengths(link is external) points out, “The three-week surge in lumber prices just ahead of anticipated duties on Canadian exports to the states looks similar to the one that occurred in 2001 just before the U.S. imposed countervailing and anti-dumping duties on Canada.”

What’s Driving Latest Wave of Home Remodeling? Hint: These Baby Boomers

Spending on home improvement touched a fresh record last year and will continue to increase over the coming decade as America ages, according to a report out Tuesday.

The baby boomers are one of the most significant drivers of that spending, according to a report from the Joint Center for Housing Studies at Harvard University. Analysts there forecast that homeowners 65 and older will account for one-third of all improvement expenditures by 2025, more than double their share from 1995-2005.
