Growing Demand and Tight Supply Fuel Housing Affordability Concerns

A decade after the onset of the Great Recession, the national housing market has, by many measures, returned to normal, according to the latest State of the Nation’s Housing report, released by the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University. Housing demand, home prices, and construction volumes are all on the rise, and the number of distressed homeowners has fallen sharply. However, along with strengthening demand, extremely tight supplies of both for-sale and for-rent homes are pushing up housing costs and adding to ongoing concerns about affordability (map + data tables). At last count in 2015, the report notes, nearly 19 million US households paid more than half of their incomes for housing (map + data tables).

Is Your Trim Inventory Getting Bulldozed Before it Even Leaves the Yard?

PalramPVC trimboard has a tough journey from manufacturing to distributor to dealer to job site. Along the way, trim is at risk for dirt, scuffs and scratches. What the latest Fed rate hike means for mortgage rates

The Federal Reserve raised short-term interest rates another quarter percentage point Wednesday. No surprise there. If only you could talk the central bank into a game of high-stakes, no-limit hold ’em. The Fed doesn’t have a poker face — and that’s the way it’s supposed to be.

Fed Chair Janet Yellen and her Federal Open Market Committee counterparts go out of their way to make sure short-term interest rate moves are anything but a surprise to world markets. But even an expected interest rate increase can have some very real consequences.

Here’s what this latest move means for mortgage rates.

Economists: Housing inventory could soon turn into an emergency

The latest report from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the U.S. Census Bureau showed housing starts sank to an eight-month low. Now, economists are saying that drop could intensify in the months ahead as building permits also saw a drop in May.

“Housing shortages look to intensify and may well turn into a housing emergency if the discrepancy between housing demand and housing supply widens further,” said Lawrence Yun, National Association of Realtors chief economist. “The falling housing starts and housing permits in May are befuddling given the lack of homes for sale and the quick pace of selling a newly-constructed homes.”

U.S.-Canada Trade Spat Set to Sharpen as Lumber Decision Nears

The U.S. is setting the stage to heighten one of its most-contested trade battles with Canada this month as a decision over lumber duties nears.

The U.S. Department of Commerce is scheduled to announce whether it will impose preliminary anti-dumping duties on Canadian softwood lumber by the end of June. The U.S. already escalated the row in April by slapping tariffs of up to 24.1 percent on Canadian shipments. This month’s decision may bring the combined duties to more than 30 percent according to RBC Capital Markets. The fees would be levied against companies such as West Fraser Timber Co. and Canfor Corp.

Tallest wooden tower in the U.S. gets green light

Timber construction is a hot new (and old) trend promising sustainable, affordable buildings without sacrificing beauty or strength. While the movement started in Europe, it’s fast spreading to the U.S.

Just last week, the country’s most ambitious timber construction project—named Framework—was given the green light, receiving its building permit following a number of safety and structural tests. When finished, the 145-foot-tall tower in Portland, Oregon, will be the tallest wooden high-rise in the U.S. Designed by LEVER Architecture, the 90,000-square-foot building will house office space, retail, and sixty units of affordable housing.
