Real Issues. Real Answers. Transitioning to New Business/POS Software

For the vast majority of LBM dealers (92%, according to our survey), their business point-of-sale software is an integral part of their business. While the latest offerings from industry software vendors are more robust and powerful than ever, a sizable number of dealers still rely on systems that are decades old. One reason: reluctance to tackle the process of transitioning from a tried-and-true system to the new and unknown. As readers report here, a well-planned and executed transition can pay serious dividends, but there are ample horror stories of software transitions gone wrong. This month's article shares "been there, done that" insights from dealers who've experienced transitioning to a new business/POS system.

This will be the best summer for the housing market in a decade

Following the strongest spring in 10 years, the residential real estate market should continue to see growth throughout the summer despite some growing economic headwinds.

Through May, year-to-date home sales (that's non-adjusted existing- and new-home sales combined) are up 6 percent over last year, which was the best year since 2007, according to realtor.com calculations using National Association of Realtors and Commerce Department data. Meanwhile, home prices are again up 5 percent to 6 percent, according to Case-Shiller and other sources.

A Premium Floor That Saves Time and Money

Thicker Floor SheathingWant a stiffer floor system that can save you time and money? Consider a premium I-joist floor system using 7/8 Performance Category OSB or plywood glued and nailed to 14-inch-deep I-joists that are spaced at 24 inches on center. The system drives a lot of savings compared to conventional floors with 16 inch-on-center framing, including:
  • 1/3 fewer joists to install by the framing crew
  • 1/3 fewer fasteners and hangers used to install the joists
  • 1/3 less floor construction adhesive
  • 1/3 less floor sheathing fasteners
  • 1/3 fewer holes to drill for running ductwork, electrical and plumbing.

With crumbling floors and ceilings that could collapse at any moment, about five feet of standing water and toxic air not safe to breathe, a West Seattle house was listed recently with the condition that only licensed contractors who sign a legal waiver could enter it.
