Rebuild efforts dented by labor shortages in Hurricane Harvey aftermath

The recovery efforts after Hurricane Harvey are hitting the same issue that long plagued the Texas housing market: A shortage of construction workers.

Following early concerns from the National Association of Home Builders, rebuilding Texas’ housing market down south, along with the still much-needed new housing inventory in North Dallas, will take time due to a lingering labor shortage and rising lumber prices.

Protect your product, and your bottom line, with KleerPak.

Kleer Kleer trimboards with TruEDGE® are engineered to resist dirt and easily wipe clean. But the path from the manufacturing plant to installation can be hard on building materials. With KleerPak, Kleer trimboards are wrapped in small quantities to help prevent dirt and wear along the way. So, dealers can sell smaller quantities without leaving the remaining stock exposed in the lumberyard or warehouse and builders can use the boards they need on a job. After all, of the home finishes a customer can choose, dirty is never one of them.

Fed Officials Ponder Slow Inflation With December Hike On Table

Federal Reserve officials said there’s room to be patient in the run-up to their December policy meeting, even as they aired varying degrees of concern over this year’s inflation slowdown.

San Francisco Fed President John Williams said he expects “gradual rate increases” over the next couple of years, with one possibly as early as December, and Dallas Fed President Robert Kaplan said he’s keeping an open mind toward an increase that month. Kansas City President Esther George, a consistent inflation hawk, said she favors tightening in “small doses” and the committee should take it on a meeting-by-meeting basis.

Remember when Uncle Sam would pay you to buy a home?

In the midst of the Great Recession, the government basically bribed first-time home buyers who were afraid of “catching a falling knife’’ — investing in a home even as prices were plummeting — with generous tax credits. Almost a decade later, with home prices surging across the country, many who did buy have been rewarded for their daring.

Ten years ago this month, home prices were steadily slipping after having nearly doubled between 2000 and 2006. It was almost a full year before the collapse of Lehman Brothers would mark the onset of a catastrophic global financial crisis. But by October 2007, Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson was calling the decline in housing “the most significant current risk to our economy.’’ He was right, of course, though most Americans still had no idea how bad it would get.

Is Your Trim Inventory Getting Bulldozed Before it Even Leaves the Yard?

PalramPVC trimboard has a tough journey from manufacturing to distributor to dealer to job site. Along the way, trim is at risk for dirt, scuffs and scratches. For a dealer, that means spending time and money on special handling and storage, cleaning, inventory shrinkage, product returns and delivery refusals.

That's why Palight Trimboard is your inventory friend: EverClean™ Protective Film on both sides of every board. Three no-paint colors (white, sand and clay). Two finishes (smooth/smooth and smooth/woodgrain). Palight Trimboard puts lost trimboard margin back into your pocket.

Women in Housing: The Long and Winding Road

We’ve come a long way since the ‘50s, when “barefoot and pregnant” wasn’t just a saying—it was a way of life for women. Kept out of the workplace by societal expectations, the women of years past spent their days cooking, cleaning and tending to the kids—and, most importantly, leaving the “real” work to their husbands.

While few could say the situation has completely turned around—after all, women still earn just $.80 to every male dollar, there is one thing for certain: Women have become an integral part of the modern workplace and, in particular, the housing industry.
