A Historical Look at Hurricanes' Impact on Construction

It's been more than a decade since Central Florida was hit with a major hurricane and the full fallout from Hurricane Matthew remains unknown at this time.


One thing's for sure, the real estate and construction industries certainly will see a plethora of impact, including more work for construction workers as ravaged areas need to be rebuilt. Insured losses typically result in increased spending on building products.

Worried About Housing? You're Not Alone

Rising mortgage rates, overheating home prices, nothing for sale, pre-election jitters - the list of reasons to lose confidence in the housing market is growing.

In fact, the share of consumers who think now is a good time to buy a home fell 5 percentage points in September in a monthly housing sentiment survey (known as HPSI) by Fannie Mae. The only drop that was bigger was the share of consumers who think mortgage rates will fall.

Builders Brace for Aftermath of Hurricane Matthew

New construction isn't the only concern. In Florida alone, up to 954,000 homes valuing $189 billion are vulnerable to damage from storm surges, according to CoreLogic. More than 620,000 additional homes in North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia are also at risk, worth more than $137 billion in reconstruction value. Florida metros including Daytona Beach, Melbourne, Miami and Jacksonville are among the most at-risk for damage from storm surges. CoreLogic's damage projections do not consider the impact of wind, with gusts of up to 150 miles per hour reported.

Shelly's Opens New Philadelphia-Area Showroom
