It’s Not a Millennial Problem; It’s a Leadership Problem

Along with four others, I participated on a panel titled “Real World Strategies to Attract, Hire, and Retain Millennials” at September’s LBM Strategies conference. As a group we had one goal in mind: to put to bed the myth that the LBM industry was not “sexy” enough to attract, recruit, and retain millennials. As a millennial and HR Director myself, I found this panel mildly humorous. I don’t view myself as a stereotypical millennial (entitled, lazy, job-hopper, social media-obsessed, etc.). Nor do I work for a company that holds such beliefs.

As I networked with other organizations within the industry, I was surprised that many of them discuss attracting and retaining millennials as a large challenge. I then asked myself, “what strategies have allowed Drexel Building Supply to attract and retain our 50% millennial demographic when other companies find this to be their Achilles heel?”

5 Big Real-Estate Trends to Watch in 2017

A surprising twist toward the end of 2016 with the election of real estate magnate Donald Trump as president is likely to presage some dramatic changes in 2017 for the housing industry, which saw healthy increases in values this year, thanks to factors including low interest rates, lower gas prices, stronger wage growth and millennials getting off the fence and entering the market.

Still, as demonstrated by the Nov. 8 presidential election, anything can happen. Here are five things to watch for in real estate in 2017 — don’t get blindsided:

Dispatch from #HousingOurFuture: Not Enough Real Estate Agents are "Culturally Sensitive"

In the coming decades, the rate of homeownership among Hispanics and Asians will roughly double, and the housing industry is not ready, a panel of experts said Friday.

The panel, titled "Reigniting the First-Time Homebuyer Market," took place at the Housing America's Families Forum currently underway in Dallas at the George W. Bush Presidential Library. The event is hosted by the J. Ronald Terwilliger Foundation for Housing America's Families.

OVER-ENGINEERED TO LAST

Dricon Fire retardant treated wood Dricon® Fire retardant treated wood has been repeatedly called “over-engineered” since its launch in 1981, but after 35 years of performance excellence, we’re ok with that.

Innovative TruEDGE® technology provides sharper, cleaner edges that resist dust and dirt, and a smooth finish that’s easier to clean than wood trim or PVC boards without sealed edges. UV inhibitors provide long lasting protection over time, they are perfect for creating authentic accents around windows, doors and more.

Whether you’re using plywood or lumber, Dricon® has an unmatched record of protection against flame spread, smoke development, rot and decay. We back that up with a 40 year roof-system warranty against heat degradation, and the industry’s only preservative warranty on fire retardant wood.

Homebuilding Is Hot Again. And Not Nearly Hot Enough

New residential construction rose to a nine-year high in October, according to census data published today. Builders started new homes at an annualized rate of 1.32 million, the most since August 2007 and the largest month-over-month increase since July 1982. That's good news for a housing market struggling with low inventory in recent years, driving up prices and forcing prospective buyers to delay purchases, even as the vaunted millennials age into their prime homebuying years.

The less-good new is that there's still a long way to go.
