LBM Journal Editors' Choice 2008 50 Hot Products-International Builders' Show
By Staff Report
Were there an official launchpad for new building products, it would most likely be the International Builders Show. Each year, IBS draws tens of thousands of building industry pros from around the globe for workshops, seminars, and more than one million square feet of exhibit space. For builders as well as a healthy showing of LBM dealers, a primary goal of this annual event is to explore the exhibit floor in search of the "next big thing." Despite the current housing downturn—or perhaps because of it?—innovations were in abundance at the 2008 IBS, held Feb. 13-16 in Orlando. While the levels of innovation ranged from incremental improvement to the creation of entire product categories, one thing was clear: your builder, remodeler and homeowner customers will have access to better products than ever before.
This year, as we do every year, LBM Journal's editors combed the aisles, met with hundreds of manufacturers, and brought back volumes of new product information to sift through for our "50 Hot Products from IBS" feature. Fifty of the best are featured in the following pages. (Note: The products are listed in no particular order; the numbers don't indicate a ranking. In our view, all are worthy of a closer look.) Incidentally, the title isn't 100% accurate, as we actually feature 51 products this year. The additional one is Dow's new Styrofoam SIS Plus, which is shown on page 12.

Wolmanized Metal-Free Treated Wood
Wolmanized L3 Outdoor Wood is the first residential treated wood decking product protected by a nonmetallic solution, according to Arch Treatment Technologies. The company also notes that the treating formulation has low impact throughout its production, distribution, and installation, but is very effective as a preservative. The wood stands up to wood-destroying organisms, and is backed by a lifetime limited warranty. This wood is intended for out-of-ground use. To resemble familiar types of treated wood and distinguish treated from untreated material, pigment is being added to the treating solution, giving the final treated wood a light brown hue. It has a built-in water repellent; is protected by an EPA-registered formulation that penetrates a wide range of wood species, and is comparable to untreated wood with regard to corrosion of metal hardware. Wolmanized L3 Outdoor wood has received an evaluation report (ESR-1477) from ICC Evaluation Service (ICC-ES) providing evidence that this new type of pressure-treated wood meets code requirements. Building professionals utilize the ICC-ES Evaluation Reports to provide a basis for using or approving products in construction projects following the International Building Code. In addition, the product has been added to the GreenSpec Directory, a listing of environmentally preferable building products compiled by BuildingGreen Inc., publishers of Environmental Building News. Finally, the preservative in Wolmanized L3 wood has been recognized for use within the Hallmark Certification of the Window and Door Manufacturers Association (WMDA). www.wolmanizedwood.com;

Georgia-Pacific Nautilus Wall Sheathing
Georgia-Pacific’s patent-pending Nautilus wall sheathing is a first-in-class OSB panel with a pre-applied weather-resistant barrier that eliminates the need for separate building wrap installation. The company says Nautilus sheathing offers builders and contractors an efficient installation process because it combines sheathing and building wrap installation into a single step. This process eliminates the need for a separate crew to install building wrap, which helps reduce costs and can save time on a construction project. Nautilus panels can also resist rain and moisture during the construction period, which can help avoid costly moisture-related problems. The code-compliant Nautilus panels are installed like typical wall sheathing. When seams are sealed with code-compliant Nautilus 3-in. wide seam tape, the walls are protected against air leaks, which helps improve energy efficiency. The panels are backed by a lifetime limited warranty to the homeowner that protects against delamination of the OSB substrate, and a 90-day exposure warranty to the builder that covers delamination of the weather-resistant barrier from the substrate.

fiberon Sanctuary Decking
Fiber Composites says its new line of residential decking boards, fiberon Sanctuary Decking, is one of the easiest to install, most durable, low-maintenance and realistic looking composite decking boards on the market. fiberon Sanctuary Decking consists of a cellular PVC (or foamed PVC) core with no fiber fillers, which eliminates edge cracking,
stain retention, and water absorption. This core is surfaced with a durable, highly weatherable layer of a unique PVC alloy. This alloy layer combines PVC and ASA (Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate), a material used to protect automobile bumpers and outside mirrors. The company says the ASA additives resist fading, are more abrasion-resistant than wood-plastic composites, and create a cellulose free surface to the fiberon Sanctuary deck board. The decking also is made with a proprietary coloring process that uses a blend of light and dark hues to create natural color variations found in real wood. For added realism, a photo-realistic embossing pattern, captured from real hardwoods, is pressed into the surface, resulting in a natural look and feel. fiberon Sanctuary Decking has a limited 20- year warranty. It is available in multi-chromatic Ipe and Driftwood, and mono-chromatic brown, tan, and gray. Grooved boards (GV), which accept the Phantom Hidden Deck Fasteners, are manufactured in 12-, 16- and 20-ft. lengths, while square edge boards come
in a 20-ft. length only. www.fiberondecking.com

AERT MoistureShield Juniper Collection
Advanced Environmental Recycling Technologies (AERT) has expanded its MoistureShield Decking line with the Juniper Collection. Made using organic cedar, the Juniper Collection is a natural, earth-friendly, long-lasting premium composite decking product created to endure the most severe environmental conditions. The line of organic cedar composite
decking is composed of heartwood cedar fibers from Juniper Mexicana, or Texas Cedar, which extract a tremendous amount of water from Texas aquifers. Because cedar overgrowth has led to shortages of water and grazing grasses for wildlife, as well as drinking water for the state’s growing population, ranchers have had to eradicate thousands of acres of Juniper trees. AERT is now utilizing this discarded cedar, which would otherwise be burned, and blending it with recycled polyethylene plastic, such as milk jugs, plastic grocery sacks, and detergent bottles, to make a composite decking product. Made with 90% pre- and post-consumer recycled content, the highly water-resistant Juniper Collection is manufactured using the company’s plastic encapsulation process that shields and protects the wood fiber from moisture and insect damage. Additionally, because it is made of natural cedar, the Juniper Collection does not need or contain mildewcides, insecticides, or coloring agents. The company says the Juniper Collection’s deep wood grain texture gives it the look and feel of real wood, but unlike traditional wood decking, it offers exceptional durability and does not need staining, painting, or sealing. In addition, the Juniper Collection requires no special tools to install, is easy to assemble, and is backed by a limited lifetime warranty against rot, decay, and insect damage. The Juniper Collection also exceeds the requirements for landscape decking published in the LEED for Homes standards. www.moistureshield.com; 866.729.2378

Simpson Strong-Tie Quik Drive System
Standing-seam metal roofs offer desirable qualities such as durability, longevity, low maintenance, and a range of colors and styles. In the past, attaching the roof’s interlocking panels required a screw gun and bulk screws, but Simpson Strong-Tie now offers the first auto-feed screw driving system for standingseam metal roofing—cutting fastener installation time in half. The Precision Placement Quik Drive System was introduced at the International Roofing Expo in Las Vegas in February. The company says the tool is lightweight, fast, and easy to use. It’s specifically designed to drive fasteners into the pre-existing hole of a standing seam clip and in close proximity to the clip bend without interference by the tool. With the collated screw strips, there is no more fumbling for bulk screws, which also minimizes screw waste. Installers can now drive screws with one hand, greatly increasing productivity. The tool also speeds up installation of trim details. The tool’s attachment works with most brands of screw guns and two types of Quik Drive fasteners. There’s a full line of pancake head self-drilling and selfpiercing fasteners for standing-seam metal roofing, as well as ultra-low profile pancake fasteners for use with snap-andseam profile metal panels. The Precision Placement tool comes with a limited lifetime warranty. www.strongtie.com
EZ Stair Stair Technology
The EZ Stair System features patented, adjustable parallel brackets that allow carpenters and tradesmen to build stairs of superior strength and structural integrity up to four times faster than conventional methods. The company says its adjustable twostringer stair building system is of particular value in the “modular/factory built” construction environment, due to substantially lower cost, and says 80% of the final trim work is eliminated with its new tongue and groove application. This interior stair system also allows custom home builders to construct and fully install classic knee-wall stairs in three hours or less. A major product development is the use of its brackets for “rail post support code requirements,” with the addition of the rail post support application for risers and treads in stair building for decks. Recent testing conducted by Testing Engineers Inc. (San Leandro, Calif.) showed that EZ Stairs brackets exceed IBC lateral load specified code requirements with minimal deflection. The IBC lateral load rail support requirements are 200 lbs. per 36-in. (residential), 42-in. (commercial), and 500 lbs. (ultimate). Traditional stair construction usually requires multiple cut 2x12’s be aligned and positioned at proper intervals serving as vertical support for various designated spans with or without risers. For this application (without risers), EZ Stairs brackets can be used along with 2x6 cross blocking and positioned where rail post support is needed. The system only requires two outside stringers for exterior spans up to 7-ft. wide. www.ez-stairs.com; 866.693.9570

Henkel Polyseamseal Ever Bright Silicone Sealant
Henkel Corp. says its Polyseamseal Ever Bright Silicone Sealant is the first proprietary silicone formula designed with a triple action protection system to defend the cured silicone sealant against mold for five years after application. The triple action protection prevents mold from adhering to the sealant, resists the spread of mold, and inhibits mold growth on the cured seal for five years. The 100% waterproof formula prevents and eliminates mold from the inside out, leaving the cured sealant free of common mold. The company says while most traditional bathroom and kitchen sealants claim antimicrobial protection, many show signs of deterioration within the first year after application, but Polyseamseal Ever Bright Silicone Sealant’s is designed to inhibit the growth of mold on the cured seal for five years. The sealant is available in white in 10-oz. plastic cartridges. www.polyseamseal.com
Cosella-Dörken DELTA ROOF Underlayments
Cosella-Dörken Products, a building materials manufacturer now expanding into the roofing category in North America, has introduced four new roof underlayments representing the latest advances in roofing technology from Europe. The company says its new underlayments not only keep weather out, but reduce energy consumption, reflect up to 50% of radiant heat, help rid a home of excess moisture, can hold their own in a hurricane, and double the life of the roof.
The underlayments are being introduced in North American markets as DELTA-MAXX TITAN, DELTA-FOXX, DELTA-VENTS and DELTA-ROOF. DELTA-MAXX TITAN roof underlayment has a shiny silver TITANium coating that reflects up to 50% of radiant energy to keep homes cooler in summer. A self-adhesive border speeds installation and acts like a zipper to lock weather out and keep home temperatures comfortable. By lowering air-exchange rates, TITAN reduces heat-energy consumption up to 9%, according to the company. The company says its MAXX TITAN is the only underlay equipped with a bottom layer to absorb excess moisture. This sponge-like layer safeguards wood roof rafters and sheathing by soaking up excess condensation or water, for release later through evaporation. DELTA-FOXX and DELTA-VENTS are multilayered
underlayments to be used on fully insulated pitched roofs. The company says that although their outer surfaces are impermeable to wind and rain, they are highly permeable to water vapor that originates from inside and have a moisture management layer to facilitate its evaporation. DELTA-ROOF is for ventilated roofs with conventional asphalt shingles. This non-permeable roof underlayment provides four layers of top protection against any type of weather. www.cosella-dorken.com; 888.4DELTA4
Ainsworth SteadiTred
SteadiTred stair tread panels from Ainsworth Engineered offer users the ability to construct high-quality stair systems for residential and commercial buildings. With a greater spanning capability than competitively priced composite materials and more dimensional stability than solid-sawn lumber, the company says SteadiTred is a cost-effective choice for builders, and for dealers who are manufacturing stair systems for installed sales programs. Ainsworth offers cut-to-size options for maximum flexibility, with lengths available up to a maximum of 48-in. This offers several advantages, since it eliminates the need to measure, cut, and install on site. Materials can be delivered to the job site pre-cut, which also eliminates waste. As an engineered wood product, the company says SteadiTred provides more dimensional stability
than solid-sawn lumber, and is consistently flat and straight, and the panels are lighter and stronger, making them popular with builders. SteadiTred panels are custom-manufactured from OSB and meet or exceed product standards and building code requirements. The screened surface enables contractors to conform to OSHA safety guidelines regarding slippery conditions on stairways. www.ainsworthengineered.com; 877.661.3200

JELD-WEN MAG-Lock_
JELD-WEN says it is the first company in the nation to introduce magnet lock technology for residential vinyl windows. Called MAG-Lock, this new one-touch automatic lock now comes standard on JELDWEN Premium Vinyl slider and single-hung windows. MAG-Lock’s advantages include intuitive and easy to use design, safe and secure performance, and a stylish low-profile design. Users can literally use just one finger or the side of their hand to operate and lock their windows. MAG-Lock has passed the industry’s rigorous forced-entry resistance test, in addition to tests for water and air infiltration. The high-quality rare earth magnets used will maintain their strength for up to 10,000 years. Tests show that the magnets will continue to maintain their force even after the lock has been engaged and disengaged for 36,000 cycles—more than most windows would ever be opened and closed in a lifetime. The magnets also can withstand extreme temperatures, including above 300 degrees F and below 150 degrees F. The lock is hidden from view from the outside of the window, which enhances security since would-be intruders cannot identify the lock from the home’s exterior. This also provides an architecturally desirable look, since the lock doesn’t interfere with the straight, clean lines of the windows.

Paslode Cordless Framer
Paslode, a division of Illinois Tool Works, says it is making the “best” even better with the introduction of its CF-325 Cordless Framing Nailer, noting that its previous model was already the most popular cordless framing nailer in the nation. A newly-designed nosepiece allows surefooted toe-nailing at any angle, and the cordless framer has been re-engineered to deliver dramatically faster firing than its predecessor or competitive tools, particularly in hard-to-reach spaces. The CF-325 drives reliably from the first nail to the last, with no delays between drives. The end result is greater productivity in any situation. Another major improvement is in the fuel cartridges that power Paslode’s drive system. The company’s new QuickLode Fuel System employs a completely re-designed “no-step” canister that eliminates the pre-use snapping, twisting, and aligning required by previous models. Users need only drop the fuel into the tool, close the fuel compartment door and begin nailing. The new fuel is guaranteed to deliver at least 1,200 drives and offer an 18-month life. And, because of the new fuel design and an internal upgrade to steel O-rings, the Paslode CF-325 can go five times longer (50,000 drives) between recommended cleanings. Along with the debut of its new fuel design, Paslode is introducing an exclusive Fuel + Nail Combo Pack system to keep users from ever running out of fuel. Packs include fuel cartridges and exclusive Paslode RounDrive nails. www.paslode-cordless.com; 800.222.6990
Boise PlanSwift

GoPro Universal Stair Bracket System
GoPro Construction Solutions says its GoPro universal stair bracket system is the only system with brackets that have imprinted scale markings indicating the staircase rise and run. Thus, properly attaching the brackets according to the pre-determined rise and run of each stair requires simply matching the meeting of the brackets at the indicated markings, which can accommodate all pitches, rises, and runs. The company says its product easily adjusts to any staircase pitch; offers 50% savings because of minimal marking and cutting and less waste, and it virtually eliminates mistakes, which cost time and money. The system can be used for interior or exterior stairs. The GoPro universal stair bracket includes
left-side, right side, and bottom brackets made from sturdy 16-gauge hot-dipped triple-zinc galvanized steel. When middle stringers are required, left- or right-side brackets can be used. GoPro is an affiliate of Talan Products.

TimberTech Ultra Low-Maintenance Decking
TimberTech has introduced its first expanded polymer (PVC) deck planks—XLM—an extreme low-maintenance alternative decking solution. Responding to homeowner demand for low-maintenance decking options and to contractors’ needs for easier to install decking materials, TimberTech developed XLM to satisfy both. The company says XLM provides customers unparalleled scratch and stain resistance, and the decking boards have received a Class A Fire Rating, the most stringent rating available for exterior fire resistance. The product is 40% lighter than TimberTech’s wood plastic composite planks, and features a solid cap to reinforce its structural integrity. It is available in grooved or nongrooved planks. Grooved planks are designed to work with CONCEALoc, TimberTech’s stainless steel hidden fastener, which provides quick and consistent gapping while keeping a fastener-free surface. XLM is offered in three colors—Mountain Cedar, RiverRock, and SandRidge—and is available in 12-, 16- and 20-ft. lengths as well as 12-in. fascia in 12-ft. lengths. MI Windows and Doors BridgeWood
MI Windows and Doors says its BridgeWood line combines structural strength, classic appearance, and energy efficiency in a glass package with unique hardware features. Combining the advanced engineering technology of the Green & Clean glass package with MI’s state-of-the-art manufacturing process increases the window’s energy saving performance. The Green & Clean glass package offers multi-level value to the window by joining the thermal properties of Low- E 3 glass, which can reach a U-Value of up to .30. (The windows also use Cardinal Glass Industries’ “Neat” glass system, which draws upon the sun’s UV rays to loosen dirt, making the glass easy to clean, and its “Preserve” protective film, which adheres to the glass until the end of the construction process, when it can be peeled away revealing the clean glass.) The technology behind the BridgeWood line allows homeowners to enjoy the look of wood windows without weathering issues such as rotting and warping. Windows arrive standard from the factory in one of five colors; white, adobe, almond, evergreen, or chocolate. BridgeWood is available in casement, awning, double-hung, picture, and specialty styles. www.miwd.com
TimberWolf Pro-Series Wood Composite
FiberTech Polymers Inc.’s TimberWolf Pro-Series Wood Composite Fencing has been designed to meet the needs of professional fence installers and landscape contractors. Like the TimberWolf Classic-Series, the TimberWolf Pro-Series features natural wood beauty, low maintenance (no painting or staining required), and a transferable limited lifetime warranty, meaning it can be transferred to new homeowners. EcoStar EcoVent Ridge Vent
EcoStar is adding EcoVent to its line of premium accessories. EcoVent is a continuous tile-over ridge vent that efficiently removes hot, moist air from the attic space of a building. EcoVent offers durability and protection against rain, snow and ice, providing a breathable, yet efficient weather barrier in virtually every weather condition. OVRX Barricade Wall Panels
OVRX Manufacturing Inc., producer of the BARRICADE insulated basement system, which consists of insulated sub-flooring tiles, has introduced BARRICADE insulated wall panels (IWP). BARRICADE basement wall panels were developed as a one-step solution for insulating basements or cottages. BARRICADE combines the insulating quality of XPS closed cell insulation, with the convenience and stability of Oriented Strand Board (OSB). The panels replaces stud walls and batt insulation (which are susceptible to mold growth). The company says the product means users no longer must search for studs, since drywall can be nailed or screwed directly to panels, and installation time is cut in half. A combination of rigid Styrofoam which is mechanically bonded to OSB provides an insulation barrier that stops moisture. This barrier effectively reduces the dew point, eliminating moisture and dampness coming through your basement wall and floors. BARRICADE is a modular design and the wall and sub floor components can be installed as a system or can be installed separately. www.ovrx.com; 866.544.6879
