IN DEPTH: Decks

More Creativity
The use of higher-quality materials and more assurances of long life and low maintenance have encouraged expansion of deck projects and more creativity in their looks. “Design options continue to grow, and more contractors are becoming creative to stand out,” says Deceuninck’s Lipsius. “We see more creative designs that incorporate bending to get unique looks. We also see our products being used for benches, planters and similar pieces. We work with contractors to ensure they can use our products to achieve the looks they want, which leads to more referrals.”

Tapco’s Wierengo agrees that decks are becoming more elaborate. “Many homeowners are expressing preferences for extensive wrap-around decking that includes spa decks and three-season porches,” he says. “We are also finding that pergolas are on the rise, providing shade and decorative charm to outdoor spas.”

Contractors like the capabilities for creativity provided by uncapped products, says MoistureShield’s Gwatney. “They can be ripped, so they can be used to build tables, chairs and other furniture. We’re also seeing more pergolas and sun-shading areas being added, especially if there’s an outdoor kitchen the homeowner wants to keep covered.”

White Paper: Strategies For Organizational Change

Strategies For Organizational Change PLUS How to Create Goals and Processes Most of us have plenty of things we’d like to fix about our businesses: equipment...
Trex-Outdoor-StorageTrex Co. has introduced a line of outdoor-storage options that includes base cabinets and bench drawers, skirting insert cabinets, hampers, trash-storage cabinets and pull-out ice coolers. The collection provides extra room on the deck and is offered in all five Trex Transcend premium tropical shades.

Trex has aided that expansion by creating a line of outdoor-storage units. “We’re focused on providing solutions to challenges for customers,” says Zambanini. “Customers want integrated storage that works with their deck as an entertainment center. It creates more livable space but conceals it in the confines of the deck. These trends give dealers more opportunities to sell upgrades as the homeowner looks to add onto the deck.”

Porch Niche Expands
Deck projects also are expanding into enclosed areas that serve as porches. “Tongue-and-groove porch flooring is a growing category,” says NyloBoards’ Morse. “It can be used in any covered situation. Many homes also have uncovered areas that can benefit.”
