REAL ISSUES. REAL ANSWERS: Attracting and Retaining Qualified Associates

By / 1 year ago

When an industry still reeling from a mass exodus of experienced pros struggles to attract fresh talent to fill the gaps—it’s a problem. When that industry is strong and forecast to continue growing—it’s a crisis. A shortage of quality people is arguably the biggest single issue facing the LBM industry today. This month, readers share details about their companies’ efforts in…Attracting and Retaining Qualified Associates.

The Issue
This month’s issue was suggested by multiple readers over the past few months. As we do each month, we sent our brief Real Issues survey to readers who have opted in to receive our email communications. A big thank you to the 159 dealers who spent a few minutes sharing their experience with this issue.

Question 1
On a scale of 1-10, how difficult is it for your company to find qualified candidates for open positions?

As you’ll see, the ranking of the answers confirmed the reality of this problem, and effectively set the stage for the two remaining questions. It’s telling that zero of the 154 respondents reported that finding qualified was “Not Difficult at All.” Indeed, each step toward “Extremely Difficult” gained more momentum, with nearly 1/3 of respondents giving a ranking of 8, which is almost as bad as it gets. Even more telling, 65.6% (almost exactly 2/3) of respondents ranked this issue as either 8, 9, or 10.
