IN DEPTH: Doors and Windows

Along with privacy are concerns for security, which is leading to more focus on locking mechanisms. “Security issues center on the locking mechanism,” says Contat. “Multipoint locks are a popular option as an upgrade. The use of higher level home intelligence is gaining traction through higher exposure. We are paying close attention to approaches being used and ensure our doors are compatible, but the specifics are outside our area of expertise. It doesn’t affect the door per se, but it can impact the accessories that go with the door.”

“Security is always an issue,” says Weather Shield’s Koester. “There are getting to be more promises of things to come with automation, and homeowners want to know more. Customers have been using electronic systems rather than keys on their cars, and they want to know why they can’t do the same for their home. We’re seeing more of that, and I imagine it’s only the tip of the iceberg.”

Ply-Gem-1500-Vinyl-CollectionThe newly-expanded 1500 Vinyl Collection from Ply Gem Windows features three new color choices: Bronze (shown), Clay and Beige. The collection consolidates Ply Gem’s multiple vinyl window options into one platform, with a common sash and sizing. The line is customizable and offers key features to aid installation. Upgrade packages are Energy Star certified.

ProVia’s Shaw agrees. “Millennials are definitely interested in electronic locks, as using their phones and electronic technology is second nature to them. Their smartphones are a part of who they are, so the more than can do with them, the better they like it. As they become a bigger part of the market, they’ll want door automation to be a part of that.”

White Paper: Protect Your Business from Ransomware

Ransomware pirates are using the coronavirus in a variety of malicious campaigns to attack businesses. Don’t fall victim to these tactics.

In the near future door lock technology will move beyond even cell smartphones. “We expect there will be more thumbprint designs than electronic remotes,” adds Jeld-Wen’s Brosterhous. Homeowners don’t want to take their phones with them when they run, and their kids don’t always have phones, so smartphone technology has limitations. It makes sense to eliminate the smartphone interface, and there is good thumbprint technology available. We’re looking at it, but our partners do most of the lock mechanisms for us. We do have to integrate the machining with the doors to ensure they work with them.”
