IN DEPTH: Fasteners

Speed Is Key
Building more efficiently on every project is definitely at the top of customers’ minds. “Most of the new fasteners we’ve designed in recent years have had the goal of speeding up installation,” says Clark Allen, product manager for fasteners at Simpson Strong-Tie. “Many have special thread designs, low torque, integral washers and other features that increase productivity.”

Bevan Wulfenstein, marketing director at Grabber Construction Products, agrees. “Builders make more money when they can build quicker and do it well, then move on to the next part of the project. Profit is all about speed of processing the installation.”

The need for speed causes customers to look at new techniques and fasteners that integrate more pieces. “The biggest change we’ve seen is the growing number of questions about structural values for all kinds of screws,” says Greg Martel, product manager for GRK Fasteners. “Customers are looking for any reason to eliminate pre-drilling, to avoid a two-step process.” But when they change, they open themselves to being questioned by inspectors about their procedures. “They want to know the values so they can assure inspectors that it’s been done properly.”

When it comes to social media, the building industry as a whole has been fairly slow to recognize the impact of this effective marketing tool. Findings and best practices show that one of the best ways to connect with your B2B or B2C audience is through meeting them where they’re at—social media.
CAMO hidden deck fastening systemThe CAMO Hidden Deck Fastening System from National Nail combines CAMO deck screws with a CAMO Marksman tool to create a fastener-free deck surface. It works on any treated-lumber, hardwood, cedar, composite or PVC deck board. They are said to have been tested to exceed industry standards for uplift resistance and thermal cycling.

Eliminating pre-drilling has become a key feature. “We’ve focused our attention on delivering fasteners that are better engineered, that engage wood with no predrilling and continue into the wood with minimal strain and countersink flush,” says Rick Pully, vice president of sales for Screw Products Inc.
