IN DEPTH: Insulation and Housewrap

JM Corbond oc SPFJM Corbond oc SPF from Johns Manville is a two-component, low-density, nonstructural insulation system designed for commercial, residential and industrial applications. Its low-density nature provides a large yield while still providing air sealing. It meets requirements for application without an ignition barrier in attics and crawl spaces.

Johns Manville operates five Technical Centers to generate building science information and products that customers can use. “We test and develop technology-based solutions for specific market needs,” explains McGavern. “Our R&D facility in Littleton, Colo., for example, plays an important role in our product-development and quality-assurance programs and gives us the ability to design systems to fit customers’ needs.”

HERS Awareness Grows
Home Energy Rating System (HERS) scores in particular are gaining awareness among forward-thinking builders. “More progressive and innovative builders are learning that HERS ratings and scores make a difference to homebuyers when they understand their significance,” says DuPont’s Pyle. “They’re interested in building more efficiently and creating net-zero homes. Builders want to be able to talk HERS ratings and what they mean, to show the customer how they benefit from having higher quality products.”

Adds UFPI’s Murphy, “HERS scores in many markets are an important facet of marketing. If a builder has a low HERS score, they will promote it in their marketing. Energy-consciousness is a growing trend among new homebuyers, considering that after the mortgage cost, energy is typically the second highest household expense. Builders who can enhance the energy efficiency side of their homes and promote it will typically have more prospective buyers visiting their models for Sunday open houses. And forward-thinking builders are changing now before the code requires it because they see it’s coming and it will give them an edge now.”

Some communities are getting out ahead of their state adoptions, he notes. “A number of communities already use a ‘stretch code’ that provides stricter energy requirements that builders must meet than their standard state energy code, especially communities located in colder, northern climates. These communities are very cognizant of the high cost of energy for homeowners and have taken action to lessen their homes’ energy consumption and the overall energy footprint by focusing on some key energy-code requirements.”
