Main Street Lumber expanding door operations
Main Street Lumber and Millwork of Denison, Texas is growing. Owner Chuck Pool says the lumberyard is in the process of expanding it’s door fabrication business. The population growth in North Texas has spurred a need for more doors than Main Street Lumber currently produces in its door shop, so the company is expanding operations.
“In millwork, as you grow, you have to have more room for expansion. What’s happened to us is that we started in a smaller place across the street, then we moved into a larger area, thinking that would cure us for a while, but we’re at the point where we have to grow again,” Pool said.
The company expects the door fabrication expansion to be finished in early October. The facility will double the size of the current millwork shop.
Pool says Do it Best Corp. and and some of the company’s other major vendors offered support and direction in the project.
Main Street Lumber and Millwork worked in partnership with a group from the University of Texas at Arlington’s Lean manufacturing division. The advisors at the university have worked with major manufacturing plants in the area.
“We’re probably the smallest they have been involved with,” Pool said. “But we’re designing this to be Lean and efficient. What we’re doing is going to have the latest equipment we can have for our size facility.”
Main Street Lumber was purchased by C.G. Pool in 1971 and is still operated by his sons, Robert and Chuck Pool, along with Steve Linn, a partner in the company’s Main Street Millwork operation. Main Street Companies operate Main Street Lumber and Main Street Millwork, including a full line lumberyard, door shop, showroom, and hardware store.
